How to add a product category in Magento

Magento Guides

Now that we have looked at how to install Magento, installed a Magento extension and a Magento theme, the next logical step is to create a product. After all a store without any products is, well… not a store!

In order to create a product you first need to have created a category and optionally an attribute set.

The guide below will take you through the process of how to add a product category in Magento.

1
Log into the Magento admin panel

Log into your admin panel by visiting the admin URL

This is by default www.yourdomain.com/index.php/admin unless you specified otherwise on installation

magento_login

2
Navigate to the Manage Categories section

Catalog -> Manage Categories.

manage_categories

3
Create a new category

Give your category a name

Change the active status to yes

Create a description for your category

Page Title, Meta Keywords and Meta Description will be indexed by search engines, think carefully about what you input here

3
Save the category

Click the “Save Category” button in the top right hand area of the screen

save_category
