How to install a Magento theme is a question that crops up frequently. Installing a Magento theme is the quickest and simplest way to customise the look of your Magento store. Within a few clicks, you can go from the default Magento theme, to a theme chosen by you, which better represents you brand.
The good news for those who have never done it before, is that it’s a fairly simple process
There are many sites on the web offering Magento themes, both free and paid. In the example below, I will talk you through how to install a theme using Magento Connect.
Log into the Magento admin panel
Log into your admin panel by visiting the admin URL
This is by default www.yourdomain.com/index.php/admin unless you specified otherwise upon installation
Launch the Magento Connect manager
Navigate to System-> Magento connect->Magento connect manager
Login using the same credentials used to access the Magento admin panel
Launch Magento Connect
Click the “Magento Connect” link
Browse and select your theme
Click the “Themes” link on the top menu bar and browse through the themes until you find one you like.
In this example, I’ll be using the “Modern Theme” (the default Magento theme) and so click the “Modern Theme” link
Get the Magento Extension Key
Click the “Install Now” button
If you don’t currently have a Magento account you’ll need to register now (free) and then login
Click the “get extension key” button”
Select and copy the extension key
Install the Magento Theme
Close the Magento Connect page down, back on the Magento Connect Manager page, paste the extension key and click the “install” button
Review theme dependencies
After a short while, a list of theme dependencies will appear.
You should review these individually but usually it is okay to continue by clicking the “proceed” button
Wait for the console actions to complete
The console will now display and will install your chosen theme
Once this has completed, you can click the refresh button and your chosen theme will be installed.
