How to Choose the Best Domain Name for Your Business or Blog

Your domain name is your online identity.

Get it right and people remember you. Get it wrong and… well, you’ll know when you’re spelling it out over the phone for the fifth time.

Here’s how to choose a domain name that actually works — for your customers, your brand, and your SEO.

1. Keep It Short, Simple and Obvious

The best domain names are:

  • Easy to spell
  • Easy to say out loud
  • Easy to remember

If you have to explain what it is or how it’s spelled, that’s a red flag. Shorter is usually better — but not at the cost of clarity.

💡 Bad: gr8w3bdevz.biz
✅ Better: greatwebdev.co.uk

2. Use a .co.uk or .com (Usually)

If you’re a UK business, .co.uk is often the best choice. It’s familiar, trustworthy, and UK-specific.

That said, .com still rules globally — and can add credibility if you’re planning to sell internationally.

Avoid obscure domain extensions unless they really fit your brand (like .photography for a photographer).

3. Use Keywords If They Fit (But Don’t Force It)

Having relevant keywords in your domain can help with SEO and click-through rates — but only if it still sounds natural.

For example:

  • lancashirehosting.co.uk — makes sense
  • best-cheap-web-hosting-services-uk.net — spammy

If you’re building a long-term brand, focus more on clarity than cramming in keywords.

4. Check What’s Already Taken

Before you fall in love with a domain idea:

  • Check for trademarks
  • Look on Companies House
  • Google it and see what comes up

You don’t want to buy a domain and then realise there’s a business with a similar name already trading.

5. Buy Variations & Redirect Them

Once you’ve picked your main domain, consider also buying:

  • The .com if you use .co.uk (and vice versa)
  • Misspellings or hyphenated versions
  • Your name with/without “Ltd”, “UK”, etc.

Then redirect them to your main site — helps protect your brand.

6. Don’t Overthink It

Yes, your domain is important — but it’s not everything.
Plenty of successful websites have average domain names.

Pick something clean, clear and close to your brand. Then focus on building something worth visiting.
